  2. Refresh Cards as a Move (instead of at top of scene)

Refreshing your cards with no attached fiction seems really strange and hollow. This is a chance for your character to change, grow, and develop, and as such, should make an appearance in the story. I'd like to write the bits where my character realizes that they need to change tack, shift priorities, or confront their heretofore hidden character flaws.

I suppose this also applies to completing a Goal and completing a Subplot, although I haven't got there yet, myself.

  3. "How to Play" Feedback

I had a number of minor comments on the "How to Play" pages:

    • There should be an explanation of when you will receive email notifications. I think the notification system is very good, but we just didn't know what to expect when we started.
    • Please explain the "Commentary" section in the instructions (or on a ? next to Commentary). It is not intuitively obvious who will see the commentary and that it is scene-specific.
    • I didn't realize that you can make moves without playing cards or confronting challenges. This should be more explicit in the instructions as it is a…

  5. Allow Narrators to adjust the number of cards in a published obstacle

Seems there is no way to adjust the number of cards in an obstacle after the scene has been published. That can be a problem if you over or underestimated player participation, and are having a hard time meeting the challenge (and thus progressing the game).

Narrators are now able to adjust the number of cards needed for an obstacle as long as it does not force-complete the challenge. Thanks!

  6. …have cast cards flow under page header.

Currently, in Google Chrome for Mac, the cast widget flows up OVER the Storium header, where the rest of the content flows UNDER the page header. Attached screenshot for your review.

  7. Make the purpose of card stacks clearer.

When adding cards to a scene, it's difficult to understand what the number of cards in a stack means -- either as narrator or player.

As a narrator, I thought my players would be able to split the stacks. As players, they thought they'd be able to take as many as they wanted. Seems like the reality is between, where a player must take an entire stack if they take anything?

Thanks for this feedback. We used to have more language in the product explaining this but removed it because users complained it was too much. Guess we took it too far. :) We’ll figure out a better way to explain this!

As for the specifics, a stack of cards can’t be divided. Each card in the stack is a time that the player can use it in a scene. So an Asset with 5 cards can be used 5 times before it is no longer available.

  8. Gradual Card Limit

I've noticed that large-challenge scenes often drag on, while short ones lack impact.

What if: at scene start, players each have a card limit of 2. When the Narrator Continues, that goes up by one.

If a scene is really dragging (because e.g. some players feel like their character can't contribute, or a player is having time-availability issues), the Narrator could continue (possibly dropping an Asset or two) and let the other players wrap up the scene in a satisfying way, rather than having to end the scene unfinished.

Sorry for your trouble! Note that in portrait (tall) mode on the iPad, you have to actually hit the “Submit” button in order to post your commentary. It doesn’t automatically submit when you hit enter. Did you maybe overlook the submit button?

  10. Allow Narrator to modify Strength/Weakness Limits

So, I realize that this would unbalance the game as it currently is, but one of my players really doesn't like that you can only have (at most) 3 strength and 3 weakness cards before wild cards.

As the game currently is, you need to play all six of these cards for a refresh, so I really dunno how well it would work.

  11. Indication on homepage of games that need attention

With just 4 active games, I find that I spend most of my time on Storium trying to figure out where I should play, rather than actually playing.

It'd be great if rather than simply grouping games by "you're the narrator" or "you're a player in" on the homepage, if the homepage list of games were prioritized by how much they need your attention.

    For instance:
A game in which you've had the last move would go to the bottom of the list.
A game where you're the narrator and all the challenges have been completed would move towards the…

  12. Allow splitting of a deck in case the item is a gun or magic wand etc

I gave a pistol (card x5) to a player. I stated that it has 5 bullets. I would like for him to be able when he shoots the 5 bullets to still have the pistol card as an item

  13. Clarify Formatting for Paragraphs

Just a tiny gripe, and very minor inconvenience, but it might be worth pointing out that formatting asterisks need to block out each individual paragraph - I'm more used to html-style tagging so assumed you could just leave the asterisk open until you wanted to switch back to normal type. Easy to correct for the user, so hardly a big deal. Overall, think this is great!

  14. Crop Larger than Image

Like most image uploaders, users cannot "crop" an image to a size wider than the original. I think it'd be nice to be able to crop WIDER than the source image, filling the new space in with white, so that I can upload a square image and make it FIT inside the oblong space provided for any of the card images.

  15. Replace Icons with Thumbnails

Storium does a great job encouraging you to find evocative images to add to cards. But you can't see the image unless you click on the card. I put the effort into finding the right image, I want that image to replace the little target/bag/flag icon so I know the players won't miss it and will see that there's something new when I make an update.

  16. Improve keyboard accessibility

I try to not use the mouse as much as possible; keyboard centric navigation is easier for me. While I can tab around, being able to cmd-enter in text fields (à la Github) would be really nice.

  17. add a "direct to narrator" action.

Not all players are going to be cooperative and it might make for an interesting story if players could do actions the other players can't see. ie. Sneaky stuff.

If there is a way to do this already and I haven't seen it, I would love to know.

btw...I love this site. Great idea!

  19. Add a new type of story card called "Tone".

The Narrator can specify that the tone be "spooky" or "upbeat" or something and then players could award karma to players who hit that tone perfectly.

  20. Highlight Location Descriptions

It's very easy to miss the description of a new location. Since these cards aren't challenges, there's no incentive to click on and read them. I think the text for locations should be visible under the image without clicking.
