Add an Episodic "medium" for stories with a TV Series feel
Storium currently refers to structural narrative units in terms of "Acts" and "Scenes," which works wonderfully to give most games their dramatic structure, but that terminlology seems to break down in games that don't fit neatly within the arc.
The Episodic medium would differ in three major ways from a traditional Storium game:
- Focus and Writing Style. The Episodic medium is much more plot- and action-driven. It focuses on vignettes rather than robust literary scenes; there may be a few scene changes within an Episode unit that would be cumbersome with what Storium now refers to as a "scene". Moves are shorter, recommended word limits are lower, and the overall sense of time investment is much lower for players.
- New Formats for a new medium. Miniseries (one season only, e.g. Angels in America), Serial (multiple seasons, continuous plot, e.g. Grey's Anatomy, Supernatural), and Standalone (self-contained episodes with unique settings and characters, e.g. Twilight Zone, Black Mirror).
- New Storytelling tips oriented around medium-appropriate dramatic arcs. Specifically, recommendations for Series/Season Premier, Midseason Event, and Series/Season Finale episodes.
In terms of its benefit to the community, The Episodic medium would allow for lighter games in which players can take on temporary roles that are less demanding in a series or play short, one-off games that have a culture of ending promptly and demanding less time from everyone involved. On the player's end, a medium option at game creation would be the only major change necessary.
While this certainly wouldn't the format for everyone and many of us really love our rich, robust narratives, it would provide more options and draw in players who may otherwise be intimidated by the type of investment an average Storium game requires.
