Remove picked up player cards from character creation
So, in an ideal world, either incoming players to a game will have a look at the current cast to make sure what they make doesn't step on anyone's thematic toes, or if that doesn't happen the narrator will review the character and compare it to what's already on the table to make sure everything gels. Or better yet, both!
But, since we're human, that doesn't always happen, and what does happen sometimes is that a new character comes in who ends up covering the same sort of thematic ground as an existing character–which, to me, feels like stealing someone else's thunder, and that's not really cool. What I suggest, to help mitigate this, is that narrator-created player cards, i.e. pregenned strengths, weaknesses, natures and subplots be exclusive to a single player character. So when one person creates a character with a given card, that card is removed from the stable of prewritten choices for incoming players. This won't prevent every instance of the problem outlined above, but it should hopefully cut down on a significant portion of casual breaches of thematic exclusivity.
It could perhaps at least be an optional switch for narrators to set, if not as a hardcoded thing, as I can see cases where two PCs having the same card could be a good thing for certain types of games (perhaps especially with larger casts).

I agree with Heather. Make it optional, with the narrator able to dictate 'how many.'
I also agree with Robert. I don't always care if people choose the exact same cards because it isn't likely that the writers will have the same backstory and they 'should' have different perspectives (unless maybe they're twins but that's when it could be optional. ;))

I love this idea as an optional setting for the narrator.

If this is implemented I'd definitely want it to be optional. I do see what you're saying, but I've found that two characters with the same type can be perfectly fine and in most games I'd rather have my players able to play the concept they want. (Besides, in many games you're picking from more people than you intend to keep, so it can be good narrator-wise to have more than one character of a given type to choose from in apps, even if you intend to keep only one of each type.)
It's maybe more of a problem when two characters exactly match on every card, I suppose. Even then, though, I often find that two players write characters very differently even if they have all their cards the same, so it can be fine.
I don't mind this as an optional switch and could even see using it at some point...but I definitely wouldn't want it as a hardcoded thing.
