Scribophile, an online writing group, has a very interesting karma-based system. Users earn karma by critiquing others' writing, and they can't post their own work until they have amassed a karma balance of their own. Users also gain karma by other users thinking their critiques are constructive, encouraging, enlightening and/or thorough, or their forum posts interesting, educational, funny or insightful.
I recognise that this exact mechanism wouldn't work for Storium, but it is an example of a website that has really thought through its karma system and uses it to encourage and reward positive, active members of the community.
