  1. Add a non-video tutorial

The audio on my computer is not working (bad sound card maybe?), so I can't follow the video tutorial. Could you add something I can read? Maybe that way I can figure this game out!

If you click on your username up at the top of the screen, a drop-down menu will appear containing a “Help” option. It opens a web page that explains the whole game in detail! Hope that helps…

  2. allow characters to take a starting Goal

So, at least in a lot of Will's default decks, the goals listed seem more appropriate as long-term character objectives than as something I'd propose as a scene/chapter goal, as the narrator.

Would it be possible to give players the option to choose a goal at the start of play as a character-defining trait, along with a type, a strength, and a weakness?

  3. Radical Transparency

It appears that players are not privy to Things, Places or NPCs - I want them to be and it makes it hard to build a strong situation if they aren't. This ought to be a switch you can flip. If they already can it ought to be obvious how you see that stuff.

Narrators can now choose to display their cards to the players of the game, allowing them to see assets, goals, places and NPCs as they are created.

  4. Finishing should allow input text

I was finishing a scene, but I didn't know it wouldn't let me add supporting text. The wrapup didn't make sense without some text to explain why it was (in this case) a sacrifice.

  5. Allow discussion of characters between narrator and player

If the narrator rejects a character, they can explain why, which is great. What isn't great is that the only venue the player has to respond to that is to edit the character and resubmit. It would be good if the two could send messages back and forth so that a consensus can be reached.

We’ve changed things so that there is now a comment thread on each character during the approval phase. While technically you still need to re-submit your character in order to send a comment, the language is a bit more casual now and hopefully the net effect is more productive. Please let us know what you think!

  6. include a "Discuss" option along with "Approve/Reject Character"

So, if I want clarification or kibitzing, but don't necessarily want to reject the character, the only option I have to do that is to reject the character and ask my question in the text box.

I think there should be an option for the narrator and player to have a discussion about the character, sort of like the commentary field on the main scene page. "Reject" is really strong language, and I feel it should be reserved for those moments when outright rejection is appropriate.

  7. More Starter Worlds?

Do you need them? Can I make some for you? I'd love to help.

  8. Can't upload images on Android devices

I'm trying to start a scene on my Android tablet using Mobile Chrome. The interface is quite good, but when I try to upload images, Nothing happens. I click the Upload Image button, it lets me choose my method, I navigate to the correct folder, select the image, and it doesn't upload it.

  10. Windows 7, Google Chrome - can't finish move

One of my players is having trouble making a move. they have a fully made and approved character. They are using Windows 7, and google chrome and don't have any other options on either front.

He says that he can initiate a move, type out everything he wants, but when he goes to complete the move (publish) or add an item, he can't click the links.

Can we get a fix on this?

There haven’t been any more reports of this issue so we are making this as closed. If it comes up again in the new Alpha 2 playtest (launching any day now) please let us know.

  11. Allow Following a Game

Allow users to search for games in progress, not to join (though that may be an option, determined by the narrator), but to read them.

Allow users the ability to "follow" or "subscribe" to games, with followed games showing on the user's home page under a "You're following..." header, similar to the "You're playing..." header.

Allow users the option to receive an email notice when a followed game has a move or comment posted, much like those for games the user is playing.

I'm really enjoying Storium so far! :D

  12. Have text formatting

Okay, maybe it's in the scene-writing tool and I'm just not seeing it. That's possible. But if it's not there, it would be cool to be able to italicize or bold text.

  13. allow cropping/moving card images

a couple times now I've clicked on an uploaded image on an item or person card and gotten a full screen view with no crop/edit options, then when I hit "back" (the only way I can see to dismiss it), i'm back to the deck list with my half-created card deleted, forcing me to start again.

  14. Card illustrations not displaying

Every card in my set is now illustrated with an image but various characters' cards, who were created before illos were added, show blanks.

  15. Change the "Challenge" wording

Challenge is really the wrong word - it has aggressive, competitive connotations. Matthijs Holter's game Archipelago has a similar action called "Try A Different Way", which is friendlier but more long-winded. I'd suggest finding a different word for Challenge.

  16. Expand profiles

Storium has potential as a highly social RPG system. However, the problem, as always, becomes finding people to play with.

An 'Interested In' page, similar to a dating profile, would make it possible for new groups to form and for more interesting games to develop. Players could list the sort of settings and characters they're interested in, and if they're looking for new groups or games.

  17. Include Recruiting Method

I like your gaming concept and your site looks good. As I have a regular tabletop RPG group and your game is similar to the cooperative storytelling we do, I'm not sure if I want to do this for the long term, and my fellow players, who would be my most likely invitees for your game might not be interested, though I know one who might be. What you provide does seem to scratch a similar itch.

Anyway, i could see joining a story on your site if I could find players on-line. Maybe you should have a forum for…

Update: narrators now have the option to enable “open invitations”. This causes a game to be listed on our new “open games” page. From this page, any Storium user can apply to join an open game by submitting a character. As narrator, you’ll be able to review and approve (or decline) these characters just like any other.

If you’re interested in trying this, please go to the Manage page for your game(s) and turn on “open invitations”!

  18. could you post an example of play?

I'm curious to see your intention for move length and voice. Alternating first person? 3rd person omniscient? I've tried to run games with a consistent, shared 3rd person narrator voice and it works pretty well, but I'm not sure how that fits with the intention of moves.

There’s no “right way” to play Storium, at least not that we know of yet! We’re seeing all sorts of styles and story lengths, and they’re all valid in different ways. Part of our challenge is to create a system that feels natural for however people want to tell their stories.

That said, the question of what comprises a “move” largely depends on how strong of a narrator you want to have in your game. If the narrator is truly “running the story”, then the players’ moves should consist of describing their characters’ thoughts, words, and actions. If, on the other hand, you are running a highly collaborative game where the narrator is really more of a referee, then players could use their moves to describe anything that happens in the story. So far most games are being run more like the first case.

    Here’s a brief example game showing…

  19. Too many emails!

While notifications are important, I don't know if it's necessary to send an email update every time someone makes a move or leaves a comment.

Would it be possible to opt-out of specific kinds of notification, or have a daily/weekly/etc digest option for each game?

    7 votes

Storium now gives you several options for managing your email notifications. You can receive all notifications, or you can receive a single email digest per day, or you can receive a daily digest plus anything important or time-sensitive. This can all be managed from your Profile page. There is also a link in the footer of any email you receive from Storium. Note that even when you have selected to receive all notifications, comments are automatically digested so you won’t get an email for every comment.

  20. Notifier Functionality

I probably don't want to get an email every time somebody leaves a comment. Can this be something I can configure?
