Allow players to kill their own characters/allow them to die (Character Death)
I realize that not all players are going to want this, but some of us do! Sometimes major character death is a great story - making a heroic sacrifice for the good of the group is just one example. I may be missing something, but right now there doesn't seem to be any way for a character to die even if they want to! You can certainly write them out of the story, but there is no way to have the system acknowledge that they character is out of the story, and definitely not a way to do it (and stop getting posting prompts) without leaving the game. And if that happens, and it is a private game, I don't even think they'd be able to read along.
I think that players should be able to have the power to kill their own characters as part of a challenge. There could also be a game option that would allow narrators could set that would allow them to set player death as the result of a challenge, but I don't think that should be a default for all games. In general, some mechanic to allow player death is definitely desirable.

I agree that the new option of multiple characters provides all the flexibility I need. I foresee a significant increase in the death toll in some of the horror games I am playing and narrating ;).
Thanks for the great job you are doing on this platform!

It sounds like it addresses everything for me. The fact that you still have a link to the game in your profile and can still read along if the game is private is also great.
I've often wondered what happened to games I've retired from, in Gamma I can go and check.

Hi everyone — I wanted to revisit this suggestion in light of the Gamma launch. As of right now, you can:
- "Retire" your character, which preserves its history in the story but signals that it is no longer a part of it moving forward.
- Rejoin the same game by creating a new character (which does not overwrite the old one).
You cannot yet "un-retire" a retired character, but we're going to add that soon as an option controlled by the narrator.
Given the above, it seems like we've achieved a lot of what this suggestion addresses. What do you think? And thanks!

I agree that this feature is needed. There's no danger if characters can't potentially die. If there's no danger, then where's the excitement? However, subsequent to a character's death, there should be some way of allowing the player to insert a new character into the story, or converting a current NPC into a Player Character. In every story we've run so far, there has been character death, and it's frustrating when the player creates a new character that simply overrides the old character, as if the previous dead character never existed. The profile, the character's picture are lost, and the new character's avatar appears beside posts for the old character. This NEEDS to be fixed!

I think for some genres, a "heroic sacrifice" could be appropriate, where a character can give any challenge a strong outcome by sacrificing himself (think "Run, you fools!" from Lord of the Rings in the mines of Moria). For instance survival horror would lend itself greatly for that kind of use. You can imagine a large challenge failing because of all kinds of character weaknesses, but one of the team saves the day at the ultimate cost to himself.

I like this idea, but I wanted to expand it a little. If you can have a character die, there should also be a system in place to revive it. Many many stories and campaigns have tech or magical mechanisms for bringing the dead back to life. Then of course there's always the "we-thought-he-was-dead-but-oh-look-there-he-is" scenarios. I imagine the narrators could have fun with that last part as well.

There could also be a mechanism for the player to create another character if desired.
