  1. Reconsider the labels 'strong' and 'weak' for scene outcomes in favour of 'upbeat' vs 'downbeat'

The outcome we currently get are not really strong or weak in themselves. They are derived from strengths or derived from weakness, yes, but that does not make them strong or weak.

The problem with calling an outcome a 'weak outcome' is that it sounds like a qualitative judgement of the narrative. If we say, for example, that a film has a weak resolution, that's a criticism. We mean that the resolution is wishy-washy, poorly handled or incomplete.

If 'weak outcomes' were retitled, players might be more keen to embrace them and the interesting narrative complications they offer. To that…

  2. Add Code For Home Icon

I check Storrium from my iPad and made a homescreen shortcut for it. I get a bland screenshot of the page as the icon because there's nothing else set (I assume, maybe wrongly).

If you haven't, I'd recommend adding the code from the following URL to make these homescreen shortcuts use the Storium logo:

    https://developer.apple.com/library/ios/documentation/AppleApplications/Reference/SafariWebContent/ConfiguringWebApplications/ConfiguringWebApplications.html

    Cheers,

    Tim

  3. allow a player to see only their own moves in a game

Sometimes I want to look back in a game and see where I left the character last (particularly in a fast-moving game, or when I've been away for a day or two), or to fact-check something I may have said several scenes ago. I'd like to be able to quickly see only my own moves in a particular game, to be able to do this without scrolling back through multiple people's moves.

  4. Allow readers to rate stories

Number of followers on a story is a somewhat useful barometer of what's good and what's not, but I'd also like to be able to tell people how much I enjoyed a particular story. A simple five-star system would probably suffice for this. Might also be cool to be able to "send" stories to other people who might enjoy them.

  6. Peer Editing

I think it would be cool if once you made a post and someone was reading and they noticed a spelling or grammar error that you hadn't noticed they could 'suggest' a change in that word. On the players profile they could approve or deny the correction, but the suggestion wouln't appear to the other players.

  7. Allow a narrator to call a vote

Just a simple poll would do. I could see this being particularly useful during early game formation for things like polling opinions on whether a game should be private or public.

Currently external tools can be used but it would be nice have in-game.

A nice additional feature would be to be able to set a poll as anonymous, anonymous-to-players or public.

  8. Not "Kill" Characters

A game I was playing recently disbanded. I loved my character there. He's gone now. I didn't think to save his bio in other places, etc, so he's just...gone. I've learned my lesson, but I'd love to have a "retired" section on, say, my profile page so that people could see what I've played in the past/the retired characters can still be accessed. I miss my Jedi Ewok a lot! ;)

Also, can retired character be resurrected in other games? I mean, I could write a similar character, but can I use the same name? Could a retired character be…

Sorry about what happened! Until recently, a narrator could delete a game at any time, which caused everything — including characters — to be deleted. We recently changed this, so you shouldn’t have this happen to you again.

In the future (hopefully for our Gamma release) you’ll be able to rejoin a game after leaving it. We’re not sure yet about bringing a retired character into a different game, but we are thinking about it!

  9. Waiting on others

Hey, I feel like it could be important to include some variable in the name of the characters whether or not they are interested in moving, but feel like they are waiting for someone else to move. You'd have to make the character icons follow you down the screen on the left hand side as a result, but I think that would be beneficial anyways (It is irritating to have to scroll back up, though I understand some games have far too many PCs to handle that option).

A "Waiting/Ready" option would allow people to know if others are just…

  10. Create a Climax or Major Obstacle Card

This special card would be available to Narrators once per 30 moves or so. It would allow the Narrator to give a critical Scene extra heft by allowing narrator to play an additional 3 points of character/obstacle. AND it would allow players to use up to 6 cards during the scene in which the Climax Card is played, but no more than 3 per move.

I think a tool like this would really be a blast for Narrators looking to kick up certain scenes a notch or two and really ramp up the tension and pacing.

    Given that it's a…

  11. Better access to favorites

When I find a game I want to follow and star it, it can then be difficult to find it again. Could the "Favorites" page include a list of the starred games? In fact, I'd like it to follow the pattern of the home page, with the games centred and the activity as a secondary column down one side.

    Greate site generally though!

  12. Change goals to personal Challenges

I've found, so far, that it often doesn't make sense to play Goal cards on Challenges. Instead, I think Goals should work more like personal Challenges - that is, you can play strengths, weaknesses, assets, and subplots on them.

  13. Card forum

I think I'll be writing a lot of location and character cards... is there any way I can make them public for others to use? Seems a shame not to.

Maybe a forum where submitted cards can be voted on by story tellers to make them available for public use (or not).

Yes indeed, one of the major upcoming changes to Storium is the creation of “worlds”, which will allow you to share your cards (as well as other world-building content) with the rest of the Storium community.

  14. A "reply" function in scenes - to aid asynchronous play

Usually when a game is advertised as asynchronous, it's generally reassuring you that it's an atmosphere where you don't have to worry about the game moving on without you. However, that isn't the case with Storium's system as is.

Some enthusiastic players end up posting a lot, while those with less time online... come back to find that they can't properly respond to other players who've attempted to interact with their character (many posts earlier).

I thought, perhaps, a "reply" function in scenes would allow casual players the option to engage in the collaborative process at any point in a…

  15. add more filtering options to Browse Games page

I'd really like to be able to filter the Browse Games page on multiple axes. For instance, I'd like to see 'Recent Activity' + 'More Than X Scenes', to identify long-running active games that I might want to follow.

Other filters I can imagine: number of players, name of narrator, name of participant, starting deck, time of last update.

  16. Individual Challenges

I've been in several stories where people either get split up, or they have have choices they are given to make, alone.

If the Narrator could create a challenge, and have an option of who is allowed to answer it, I think that would help spice things up, rather than present a challenge and only asking certain people to take it (provided the players are honorable enough to).

  17. Remove Scenes from the Mechanics of the Game

In discussion with another player last night, we were reflecting on some of the hitches we're seeing with Storium. Games lag repeatedly (and I suspect: wither and die), and often because scenes are a problem. We've seen a number of games where a single big challenge meant that the players couldn't successfully complete all the challenges in a scene (especially if one player wasn't feeling it), and games where GMs continue scenes that should have changed...

Currently, a Narrator has a challenge limit per scene, players have card play limits per scene, refreshes and bonus wilds are between scenes. I…

  18. Show if a story you are reading is also looking for members

Several stories appear on the looking for members page, but have already begun. When you go to read them, there is no indication that they are still looking for members, and no easy way to join. You have to go back to the other list and find the story again. It is a lot of back and forth.

  19. Cooperative play & workspace

There are situation where it would be fun to make a move together with another PC. This might be coop action, dialogue, combining cards. Right now the mechanics mean either taking action for another player (of course you can't play their cards) and possibly misplaying another PC/offending someone, or working outside Storium to draft up the play together. Multiple short plays don't get the same effect.

I think it would benefit the group's sense of shared purpose, and open up richer plays and PC interactions.

My rough thought would be a cooperative workspace where you could invite a subset of…

  20. Margin of success (or failure)

Not unlike other narrative driven games (as opposed to mechanic driven ones), it might be interesting to look into pacing the outcomes of challenges by the total "value" of cards played (adding up all strong cards, and deducting all weak cards).

Then have the outcome be based on the amount of strong/weak points.
Good, better, best--for strong outcomes. Bad, worse, worst--for weak outcomes.

This idea came to me after playing a six-point challenge. I did the last move, and by that point we were into a weak outcome with three weak and two neutral cards played. Narrative-wise, there was no…
