  1. Assign new strength/weakness cards to players

Give the narrator the ability to give and take away strength/weakness cards to players in a scene. For example, someone tries to swim across a cold river in winter and becomes fatigued. By allowing the narrator to give that person (or people if multiple with same condition) a fatigue card to play as their weakness, it allows for some cool immersion.

You could give them a goal card of getting rest/warming up whatever, and once that's done the narrator takes away the weakness card.

  2. Add RSS feed to the Looking For Players forum

Title says it all. It'd be a handy way to track what's going on in there as timeliness in responding to a new post might be the key to getting into a game.

  3. Allow the narrator to give out personal challenges

There are ways now to offer advantages but no way to offer setbacks. I suggest, to make it a positive experience for the player even if not for the character, we offer the player personal challenges-- challenge cards given a point value as usual, and issued to a character. The character could then play the challenge card and up to 3 cards on it, not counting towards the scene total. The end card could be a Wild Strength or Wild Weakness depending upon a strong or weak outcome.

These personal challenge cards could be played on any move where a…

  4. Narrator can choose for subplots to be hidden

When creating a game the narrator can choose for subplots (and possible other cards) to be hidden from other players. For example if there is an espionage subplot the player could still play the subplot card without giving the game away. It could also create whodunnits etc. so other players except the narrator are kept guessing.

  5. Using specific Assets as keys

I'd like a way to set a Challenge to require a certain card be played. For instance, there's a keycard lock in front of the players, and they need to use the Key Card asset card on it to open said door. Right now, the system allows them to use any card on it. I know that I can just block them and tell them to revise it, but it would be nice if I could make it so it will simply not accept other cards but the one I specify.

  6. Table of Contents

It takes a long time to navigate previous scenes and chapters in longer stories--can you add a table of contents to make it easier?

  7. Narrator can take asset cards from player

I think in the same way a narrator can give cards to a player s/he should also be able to take those asset cards away.

Also, it might be good to have assets be associated with the outcome if a challenge. For example, if a player achieves a strong outcome for an obstacle they might automatically gain a certain asset card. Alternatively, if they have a weak outcome maybe they lose an asset card of the narrators choosing; something like that.

  8. allow changes to "nature."

As stories go on, characters change. I had a veteran monster hunter become a werewolf, for example. Alliegances shift, experience levels shift, and it would be helpful to create custom "nature" cards to reflect what characters become.

  9. add a function: Player is finished

We found that it might be handy to have some kind of an option, where players can indicate that they have nothing else to contribute to the scene. Once all players have activated this option, this indicates to the narrator that he can close the scene. That way nobody is left out just because they are not back from work yet ;-)

  10. Player-made Starter Worlds

Allow the community to make starter worlds and share them with other people. Would improve the collection dramatically!

  11. Private character notes

Just starting out, but seems it would be useful to have a private log where you can take notes about your character without disclosing to others. Attributes or events you hint at, characteristics you think of but it isn't the right time to tell, or notes about things you've said about your character that would be embarrassing to contradict later.

  12. Change how NPC characters work

I know that there is already a suggestion to: "Allow narrators to pick NPC characters for scenes without making them obstacles." But I don't think this goes far enough. Right now, characters are identical to obstacles and in many cases that does not make sense.

How this game handles NPCs as obstacles makes no sense, even when they are supposed to be hostile. When you write an NPC card, you naturally want to write a description of who they are. However, when you play such a card, your players have no idea how he/she is an obstacle. When you play…

  13. Parallel scenes, each w/ only specified characters

One scene at a time in monolithic procession, with the expectation that every character will interact, isn't working for us. As narrator I cut a scene too short but couldn't go back; I want to run two at once, i want to interleave two scenes, all currently impossible.

We will soon be adding the ability for the narrator to explicitly specify which characters are in a given scene. Would that help a bit?

Meanwhile, you can visually segment the action in a scene by using a horizontal rule (“-” in our layout syntax). Note also that the system does not require that players make a move in every scene. So you can ask someone to “sit this one out” and the scene will be able to progress just fine. Hopefully these techniques can get you un-stuck for the time being?

Regarding simultaneous scenes, we’ve received this suggestion from a couple of other users, too, and so we are thinking hard about how we could add it to Storium without making things difficult to use and understand. It’s high on our list so please stay tuned.

    Thanks for the feedback!

  14. Allow users to change usernames

Right now we're stuck with the one we chose when we sign up, and it might be good if Storium could allow users to change their usernames, but put a limit on it so things don't get too confusing. Or perhaps have a display name separate from the username entirely.

If you email support@storium.com we will be happy to change your username! Please include the following info:

    - your current username
    - the email address asssociated with your account
    - you first and second choices for a new user name (just in case the first is already taken)

  15. ...localize the game for other languages.

Hi. I'm German, though I'd like to think my English is pretty good. Now, I happen to know a goodly amount of other Germans who enjoy writing, storytelling or role-playing. Not all of them speak English to any appreciable amount but the basic idea of your project would most certainly appeal to them.

Now I realize that you need to get Storium off the ground first before you can do anything else but I would strongly suggest seeking localization for German and French at the very least. Or barring that, explicitly stating that it's okay to run stories in a…

  16. Give Narrator full edit control always

Sometimes mistakes happen, retcons need to be applied. Please give the narrator the ability to edit everything in the story at any time. Hopefully experienced players will rarely need it, but even the best players make mistakes.

  17. It would be great if there was some kind of search function within a story

...to be able to search for the occurrence of a certain word/s in a story, for instance, "golden harp". This would allow a player to be able to read all the times this has appeared in the story and refresh ones memory of how and when it was mentioned. At the moment trying to keep up continuity without having to re-read the whole pervious story is quite hard.

Ability to tag a story with categories users can search to find games they would be interested in.

  20. All Player Accessible NPC information page?

A simple editable document (basic formatting and bullet points) attached to each game, accessible to players and Narrators only, to jot notes to maintain continuity during the story. Players/Narrator could use the page to include NPC names, important plot point, bit of backstory, etc for use specifically during the composition of a move. It would need to be accessible to players while writing moves, but not need to include as many details as would be included on a previously suggested 'cast list' of NPCs.

Great suggestion, thank you! We actually have this in our evil plans. Worlds will come with narrator and player-oriented documents that provide backstory, plot ideas, etc. You’ll be able to edit and add to these in the course of play!
