I think it'd be more interesting if the narrator had the option of *posting* as various NPCs... much like players can post as characters. Or even grant access to posting as NPCs to other players, so that they can play as multiple characters.

To be honest, now that I've played more, my groups have completely abandoned the card mechanics altogether. They aren't really serving the story, because of the restrictions around their usage.

I do think the enforcement of a balance of Strength / Weakness cards is useful to new players who don't understand the concept of playing fair, realistic characters. Though, even seasoned players sometimes need reminders of when they're god-modding.

I know this wouldn't come to pass, but I honestly think if there was only a limit on the amount of Strengths a player could play before having to play a Weakness, I would like that system best. If players wanted to only play Weaknesses for the entire game.. they could go to town.

Maybe when the ability to give players Strength / Weakness cards is added to Storium, we'll both be a bit happier?

Anyway, I know what you mean. We've gotten to the point where we're just writing a collaborative story, and ignoring the game's rules completely. Just leaves us wondering why we're paying for Storium, and not on a free-to-use platform for writing instead.

Narrators are now able to specify number of cards playable per character per scene. This can be altered on a scene by scene basis.

    Thanks!

Wow. I love the idea of setting personal limits for *each* character (for scenes, obstacles, and moves). Very good idea! This could also prevent a player from playing on an obstacle that should only be played on by another character(s).

I think the point is, Sylvia... that 6 people didn't vote for a Strong ending, so why did the minority who did play Strengths get their way?

Personally, I LIKE handing power over to my narrator to include her in the game. I like her ideas and want her to be part of the storytelling. When I play a neutral card, it's because I WANT the outcome to become uncertain... not just be a waste of a card that has no effect on the outcome.

As for "the narrator is just going to end up having to write a lot more of the endings, which defeats the purpose of cooperative storytelling"... that is a grossly dramatic statement... and the opposite of the truth. Encouraging your narrator to take part in the predominantly player-driven process of Storium... is the complete opposite of what you've stated. It is co-operative and gracious.

I've seen a suggestion in the feedback forum for a great alternative to Goals / Subplots altogether that would actually make players want to pursue these "side quests".

They're "Personal Challenges" that can be played on during a scene (instead of the scene challenge). These Personal Challenges aren't set to one specific scene, either. They're carried throughout the game and are slowly overcome - at the discretion of the player. It's a neat alternative.

Great idea! To be honest, I like this far better than the current subplot / goal cards! Instead of playing subplots / goals nonsensically on a challenge (as some players are wont to do), the idea of having a Personal Challenge that isn't bound to a particular scene... would be fantastic.

I think that if you play a card on a Personal Challenge, however... it should be counted towards the card use limit for the scene.

Then, after playing on your Personal Challenge, the final step would be to choose a regular scene challenge that moves towards uncertainty (as Goal / Subplot cards currently do).

I know what you mean. I think I'd rather have the ability to send an extra comment saying, "Hey, I think my character is too similar to so-and-so, would you like me to make adjustments?" and let the narrator decide.

Right now, we can only make one comment, and then have to wait. I wanted to change my character's nature, but had no way of telling the narrator before he accepted my character. So... now I'm stuck with an inaccurate nature card.

It'd probably be more useful if their alignment shifted based on the size of the user's window.

Another option - rather than having a readily available "Reply" button:

Let's say that Bob writes his post and ends with some kind of dialogue meant for another character. "Hi, Sally!"

He can then choose to request a "reply" post from Sally (and Sally only).

When Sally comes back online 12 hours later, she sees: "Sally, you've been prompted for a reply!" Even if three other players have since posted after Bob's "Hi, Sally!" post, she can still write the reply ("Hi, Bob!"), and it will appear directly underneath Bob's old post.

This way, characters could still have full, uninterrupted segments together - without being disturbed by other players posting ahead. Asynchronous conversation, if you will.

Perhaps, to protect the integrity of the future events (if it's a concern), the narrator would have to "approve" the reply.

It's up to you as the writer to describe what you do with the asset when you play it. I'm interested to know what you're asking for exactly.

I should clarify... the narrator would then be able to close these challenges that were unfinished or completely untouched. They could completely dismiss challenges (if players expressed no interest), or choose to give a partially finished challenge an "Uncertain" status and write how it played out.

Great suggestion, thank you! We like the idea of some manner of player-to-play recognition, and Karma might be a way to do it. Longer term we are also considering audience recognition — that is, people who are reading your story but not playing in it.

I would prefer story recognition over individual recognition. I feel Storium was designed to encourage players to collaborate and build something as a team. Though, I know it comes from a place of wanting to award your peers, I'm concerned that individual 'likes' might sour the collaborative atmosphere of the game.

Perhaps, when a PM function is in place, you can simply message the person and tell them how much you like what they've done.

Why was the narrator ability to give Strength / Weakness cards removed? From what I can see in these comments here... it looks like it used to be one of the functions. I'd really like for this to return!
